In research commissioned by the National Automatic Merchandising Association and conducted by Harris Interactive, 79% of employed adults with access to office beverage service reported being more productive during the day, and getting coffee off-site took roughly three times as long as getting it on-site.

The pattern shows up most in industrial settings

Manufacturing floors, warehouses, and distribution centers are usually built away from retail corridors on purpose — land is cheaper, trucks have room to maneuver, and it's zoned for industrial use. That's good for operations and bad for anyone trying to grab a coffee on break.

A break stays a break-length break, not a half-hour round trip
Fewer late returns to the line or dock after a break
Coverage for shifts when nothing nearby is even open — overnight and weekend rotations especially

It's a small operational fix, not a big one

This isn't a scheduling overhaul or a new policy to roll out. It's a machine on the floor that removes the reason people leave the building in the first place. For a facility manager, that's a low-effort way to close a real gap in the day.

Where it pays off fastest

Facilities running multiple shifts, especially overnight or weekend rotations with limited nearby options, tend to see the clearest difference. If your break room empties out because there's nothing in it worth staying for, that's usually the sign it's time to change that.
