A different kind of vending

Pokémon cards & Funko Pops: vending beyond snacks and drinks

Walk through a mall or a movie theater lobby lately and there's a decent chance you've seen one: a vending machine selling sealed Pokémon card packs or blind-box Funko Pop figures instead of chips and soda. It's a real, growing category, not a novelty that showed up once and disappeared.

Official vs. independent

There are two separate systems worth knowing apart. The Pokémon Company International runs its own official vending network, placed almost exclusively inside grocery chains, launched back in 2017 to give collectors a fair-price alternative to scalped store shelves. Separately, independent operators buy their own machines and source genuine product through wholesale channels, placing them in venues the official network doesn't reach — malls, arcades, theaters, game stores.

Any independent operator, us included, is in that second category. No official partnership, no branding rights — just legitimate resale of real product, the same way a vending machine sells a name-brand soda without being "an official Coca-Cola machine."

Why this became its own category

Trading cards and collectible figures share something snacks don't: the appeal of not knowing exactly what's inside the pack. That's the same instinct that drives people to line up for a new card set release, and a vending machine turns that instinct into something available anytime, without a store employee or a line.

Where it tends to show up

  • Movie theater lobbies, where people already have a few minutes before showtime
  • Family entertainment centers and arcades
  • Malls and shopping centers
  • Game and hobby stores, as a complement to shelf inventory

It's not a replacement for food and drink vending

This sits alongside standard vending, not instead of it. A theater lobby with a snack machine and a collectible machine covers two different impulses — hunger and hobby — without either one competing with the other.
